2011 Musikmesse - A success story for Sabian
Highlights include show stopping artists signing session and OMNI award
In addition to the SABIAN sales, marketing and product specialists in attendance, the booth was buzzing with drop-bys from SABIAN artists.Randy Black,Jojo Mayer,Phil Maturano,Mike Portnoy,Christoph SchneiderandDom Famularo, to name but a few, made frequent stops at the booth throughout the 4-day event.
Thursday was an extra-special day for SABIAN – not only was the annual SABIAN artists dinner that night, but early Thursday evening OMNI was presented with the 2011 MIPA award for Best Cymbal, edging out the Paiste 602 and the Meinl Classic Customs cymbals. Accepting the award, SABIAN President Andy Zildjian thanked the association, and pointed out the importance of enjoying what we all do in an industry that celebrates music.
Immediately after the award presentation, the SABIAN contingent jumped into cabs in a mad dash to the artists’ dinner. This annual celebration is a great way to catch up with the talented drummers we’re fortunate enough work with, and this year the culinary theme was India. Gathered at Frankfurt`s fine Taj Taj Dining Room wereJojo Mayer,Mike Portnoy,Christoph Schneider,Phil Maturano,Randy Black,Mark Schulman,Vera Figueiredo,Dom Famularo,Swiss Chris,George Koliasand more, along with SABIAN employees. The food and drink were fantastic and the company was even better.
On Saturday the trade show was open to the public, and SABIAN hosted an artists signing session on the booth. The turnout was overwhelming in every way, little wonder given the spectacularly talented artists at the table:Mark Schulman,Mike Portnoy,Christoph Schenider,Jojo MayerandDom Famularo. As happened in 2010, security was briefly taken aback by the wave of fans that surged forward when the artists arrived. It didn’t take long for the professional Messe staff to get matters under control and everyone left the show happy, fans and artists alike.
Earlier that same morning Jojo Mayer played a high-energy set to launch the day at the Agora stage. The 400+ turnout was a show record for the opening 9:30AM slot at the Agora, and Messe organizers were thrilled to kick off the day with such a positive start.
Although the show came to a close Saturday evening, the energy would continue throughout Europe as the new week began with clinic and meet & greet tours from Jojo Mayer and Mike Portnoy – but more on that later. See you back in Frankfurt in 2012!
